The who, what and why

The concept of the book came to life combining memories over generations, hobbies, interests and family, bringing them altogether and having fun.

Mother and daughter, Anne Williams and Claire Greeves spent a lot of time on the Isles of Scilly during Claire’s childhood, where her and her sister would play on the beaches and watch from boats, whilst both of their parents took part in the Pilot Gig championships spanning many summers.

Recently the family have returned on holidays as Claire introduced her daughter to the wonders and delights of endless sandy beaches, hidden coves, beautiful flora, fauna and wildlife, escaping from the chaos of mainland life.

Claire has worked within education for over a decade and has a passion for sharing the joys that lie on our doorsteps through stories and tales, passing these on to her daughter, encouraging her to embark on adventures of her own. Her idea to write this book and bring laughter into classrooms around the UK sparked an idea in Anne’s mind, putting her artwork skills to use.

Joining forces and ideas, the story of Muffin was born, the unfortunate puffin with a badly built in GPS, leading him away from his destination and towards new friends and enemies, before eventually finding his Mum and becoming the local hero of the islands.

The photographs below show Anne felting and bringing the story to life. The artistic style brings the characters to life as they pop out of the page, giving a sense of texture and feel to the book.

Since taking early retirement, Anne took up felt artwork, learning the skills and methodologies of wet felt in the Lake District and taking part in residencies over Europe, teaching and running classes both near and far.

Anne has put together the imagery to match the words of Claire’s book using a mixture of wet felt and dry needle felting, to produce an array of textures and scenery that show the journey of the young puffin on his way home.
